Collecting beach almonds and the petals from the mountain almonds are dropping everywhere. Just had to play with the combination. - Punta Uva, Talamanca, Costa Rica
Fun fact - Two Toed Sloths actually have three toes and two fingers ... misnamed much?
This one is hiding from the rain.

I am so in love with these birds and the little ones are wildly entertaining as they try to figure out the world around them.
Great Green Macaw - Manzanillo, Costa Rica
They fledge at about 17 weeks so that is the rough age of this fellow!

Great Green Macaw - Manzanillo, Costa Rica
A pair of young ones! Some uncertainty on the age of the one who is really red in the face. The Great Green's face gets quite red as they age, but also gets red when they are emotional (happy, scared, excited, angry - did I mention angry?). We are observing to see if this little guy with the red face is from this weeks fledging or possibly a little older.

This is affectionately known as the road to hell lol. The access to the site is very very steep. No photo really conveys this one. We walk this hill about every other day to collect beach almonds. So glad I am not smoking lol.

The Mountain Almond is a truly majestic tree. The soil base is not incredibly deep here so the large trees develop these huge "legs" to ensure stability.

This young guy has not fledged yet and is just starting to poke his head out of the nest box every so often. I should be able to see him fledge while I am here!!!

I am immersed in dense jungle here. Extremely limited housing around us on this mountain side.

Poison dart frogs get their toxicity from their diet (primarily all the ants they eat)
Strawberry Poison Dart Frog (Oophaga pumilio)
The poison from some of these frogs was used to dip the tips of darts by indigenous people in order to hunt birds and mammals.

We have a little window to the ocean from where we are living.
The Mountain Almond tree is the tree of preference for the Great Green Macaw for both nesting and food source for 6 months of the year. These hard wood species can live for about 600 years and they tower above the rest of the jungle canopy.

Parrots in the mist - Manzanillo, Costa Rica
We hike down to the beach to collect Beach Almonds. These nuts are similar in size and shape to the Mountain Almond. They are excellent "training" nuts for the Macaws as they are readily available for us to gather AND they are easier to open for the Macaws. This way the young ones can learn as as their beaks are getting stronger.
Beach Almond (Terminalia catappa) - Talamanca, Costa Rica
This is the Beach Almond tree and they are prolific along the coast lines throughout this country.

This is what my Roxi girl was ... so much better to see them in the wild. These guys were pretty far away, here's hoping for better pictures soon!
